Cary Library Foundation Student Website Tutorial And Competition

The ChiRP Website Construction Project


Introduction

In partnership with the Cary Library Foundation, the Lexington STEAM Youth Team is hosting an event where YOU have the chance to design a website for the Cary Library Renovation Project (ChiRP)! This event is beginner friendly. We welcome all students grade 5-12, even those who have zero experience designing websites.

Experienced mentors and hands-on training for all-levels of webpage and graphic design will be available. We will teach students about web design, create a website for the ChiRP project, and recruit new members for the Youth STEAM Initiative.

This event is a great opportunity for students to learn new skills, meet other students with similar interests, and contribute to a meaningful community project!


Requirements

  • Open to all students (grades 5-12)!
  • Any level of experience is welcome
  • Some coding experience is encouraged for high school students.
  • Be prepared to answer these questionnaire when you arrive: your grade, whether you came with a team, any experience with HTML or web design, do you classify as beginner/intermediate.
  • Register here (currently sold out. Any new registrations will be added into the waitlist.)
  • Pay $10 fee below if you registered before it's sold out (Venmo encouraged. PayPal is second. Debit/Credit card least preferred)


Timeline

Saturday, March 18 from 10AM-4PM in the large meeting room at Cary Library (1874 Massachusetts Ave, Lexington).
  • 9:45 AM: Registration open
  • 10:00-10:30 AM: Opening remarks and invited talk
  • 10:30-11:30 AM: Beginner (by Ethan in large meeting room) and intermediate (by Baoren+Kevin in learning center) development tutorial
  • 11:30-12:00 PM: Graphic design tutorial by Jaden in large meeting room
  • 12:00-12:30 PM: Lunch, games, and forming teams
  • 12:30-12:45 PM: ChiRP design requirements presentation by Mary Ellen Ringo and QnA
  • 12:45-2:15 PM: Teams making website
  • 2:15-3:45 PM: Presentation in learning center. Each team has 1 minute to set up, 3 minutes to present, 3 minutes to evaluate, and 1 minute to leave the room.
  • 3:45-4:00 PM: Award ceremony and photo of winning teams, in large meeting room.
